Course Contents

Definition of artificial insemination, Historical background to artificial insemination, Advantages disadvantages, Anatomy-Physiology of the female genital system, Practical exercise in the insertion of the metal catheter in the genital system of the cow, Practical exercise in the application of artificial insemination to small ruminants, Practical exercise in the application of artificial insemination to sows, Sperm treatment, Catheter loading, Practical exercise of artificial insemination at breeding level, Use of an ultrasound scanner to show the point of deposition of sperm in the female genital tract.

Educational Goals

This course provides an in-depth understanding of how artificial insemination is performed on livestock animals. Students will gain knowledge about the functioning of the female genitalia, palpation of the cervix, the skill of inserting an artificial insemination catheter through the cow’s cervix and how to handle it to avoid animal injury and the skill of applying artificial insemination to small ruminants and sows.
