Course Contents
Physical properties of fluids – Surface tension, Capillary effects – Hydrostatic pressure – Manometers – Hydrodynamics –The law of conservation of mass, energy and momentum-Hydraulic structures and water flow measurements. Open channel flow – Flow in closed pipes. Water and soil –Available and useful soil moisture – infiltration – Crop water requirements – Evapotranspiration – Crop coefficients – Lysimeters – Salinity control – Scheduling Irrigation.
Educational Goals
The aim of this course is to provide students with the fundamental knowledge, concerning: principles of hydraulics and irrigation engineering so they can manage practical problems related to the application of irrigation water in the field.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to calculate the irrigation parameters of the soil, estimate crop water requirements, scheduling irrigation, solve practical hydrostatic problems and study water flow either in open channels or in closed pipes.
General Skills
Retrieve, analyze and synthesize data and information employing use of necessary technologies. Individual/autonomous assignment. Design and project management. Respect for the natural environment.
