Course Contents
Soil-plant-waterrelationships. Factors affecting the selection of irrigation methods. Surface irrigation. Sprinkler Irrigation. Drip irrigation. Guidelines for the design of Irrigation systems. Principles of agricultural land drainage. Measurements and mapping groundwater level variations. Field methods for measuring saturated hydraulic conductivity (Auger hole method, Guelph permeameter). Calculation of proper distance between drains. Guidelines for the design of drainage systems.
Educational Goals
The aim of this course is to provide students with the fundamental knowledge, concerning computational methods related to the design and operation of irrigation and drainage networks. The topics are analyzed in detail by giving numerical examples. Particular emphasis is placed on linking theory with practice.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to evaluate the suitability of irrigation methods in various case studies, design a small-scale irrigation system, perform the preliminary measurements required to design a drainage system and calculate the appropriate distance between drains under steady or unsteady flow conditions.
